Updated September 2026: in 2018 I wrote about finding a long appreciation mail from a delivery expert on a Monday morning after a week of work including weekends, and my disappointment that my manager, though copied, said nothing about it all day. I have rewritten it into advice on recognition and what to do when a manager stays silent.

I do not usually check office mail on Monday mornings while travelling back from my home town, but that day I did, and found a pleasant surprise. The delivery expert I had worked with for a week, including the weekend, had sent a long mail praising my work and commitment, with my manager copied. I had not expected it. At the office I showed it to colleagues and immediately wrote back to thank him. My manager was on every mail, yet he did not mention it once that day, which left me deflated.

Why might a manager not respond to praise for your work?

Busy days, a habit of acknowledging things in one-to-ones rather than by mail, or a plan to mention it more widely later. It can also be simple oversight. Silence on the day tells you little.

What should you do with an appreciation mail?

• Thank the sender promptly: as I did, copying your manager.
• File it: in a folder you will use at appraisal time.
• Mention it in your next one-to-one: briefly, as evidence of impact.
• Return the favour: appreciate colleagues' good work in writing too.

Is it fine to show praise to colleagues?

A little pride is natural, but a quiet approach wears better. Colleagues notice the work more than the mail.

How do you ask for recognition without sounding needy?

Frame it around the work: "The bid went well; is there anything you would like me to do differently next time?" That invites feedback and reminds your manager of the result.

Does outside praise count at appraisal?

Often yes, particularly from delivery managers and clients, because it shows impact beyond your own team. Keep the evidence, and use it.

Updated September 2026: in 2018 I wrote about ruining my four-year-old MacBook Pro by placing it on a table where I had spilled water, which reached the logic board. I have rewritten it into a guide to what to do when liquid gets into a laptop.

I was working from home for a week with almost nothing to do, enjoying good meals. During one, I spilled water on the table and did not wipe it. A little later I put my MacBook Pro down on that spot to watch YouTube, since my office laptop blocked most video, and used it for a long time. After a few hours, I sensed something was wrong. Water had reached the motherboard and damaged it. I tried several repair options, none worked, and I had to look for a replacement.

What should you do immediately after a spill?

• Shut it down: hold the power button, and unplug the charger.
• Do not switch it back on to test it: power running through wet circuits causes most of the damage.
• Turn it upside down in a tent shape: so liquid drains away from the board.
• Wipe what you can reach: with a lint-free cloth.
• Take it for repair quickly: corrosion starts within hours.

Does rice help dry a laptop?

No. Rice does little to draw moisture from inside a device and can leave dust behind. Apple itself advises against putting wet devices in rice. Professional cleaning of the board is the only reliable fix.

Can a water-damaged MacBook be repaired?

Sometimes, if it is cleaned early. Apple usually treats liquid damage as outside warranty and may quote a board replacement, which can cost a large share of a new laptop's price. Independent board-repair shops sometimes fix individual components for less.

How do you protect your data?

Back up regularly with Time Machine or a cloud service. If the laptop will not start, a specialist may still recover data from the drive, though on newer Macs with storage built into the board this is harder.

What did I learn?

Wipe spills straight away and keep laptops off wet surfaces. Five seconds with a cloth would have saved a laptop.
